ICT: Breathing New Life into Basic Education

"We hope more students benefit from ICT integration in basic education curriculum. And we hope more teachers will learn to utilize this," shares Diwa Learning Systems Executive Director Jose Maria T. Policarpio. He spoke at the recent of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in Basic Education Seminar Series hosted by Diwa Learning Systems.

The seminar series aims to help schools maximize the advantages of ICT integration.

Held at the Meeting Rooms 2 and 3 of SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia recently; the jam-packed seminar was attended by educators from across the Philippines. Participants enjoyed listening and interacting with resource speakers from the academe and the Department of Education (DepEd). “We all need to learn. Even educators need to learn new techniques to help students out,” remarked Diwa Asia Publishing Group Chairman Saturnino Belen Jr. Belen delivered the event’s keynote speech.

Dr. Maria Ana T. Quimbo of the College of Public Affairs, University of the Philippine Los Baños gave presentation on ICT integration. Titled "Technology Integration in Basic Education: Facilitating and Impending Factors," it outlined students’ learning trends vis-à-vis teacher’s methods.

Quimbo was quick to point out that being technology-savvy is a must for teachers to keep up. Students, she says; are learning at faster paces than the last decade. This is attributed to the massive amounts of information available to today’s learners.

Mr. John J. Macasio, ICT Services consultant of the Department of Education was also at the event. Macasio stressed the need to improve ICT in Philippine public schools. “Nagbabago na ang panahon.. Madalas, mas gusto ng mga estudyante pumunta sa mga internet shops kaysa sa paaralan dahil mas marami silang natututunan doon. Tayong mga guro, ay dapat umakma. Hindi kalaban ang internet,” (Times are changing. Students usually prefer internet shops over schools because they learn more things there. We teachers should adopt. The internet is not the enemy.)

Macasio is a lead proponent of the government’s ICT4E or ICT for Education initiative. It has four main areas: ICT ICT-Enabled Curriculum, ICT-Enabled Teacher, ICT-Enabled Governance, ICT- Enhanced Content, and ICT Infrastructure.

Diwa Learning Systems is indeed in stride with the times. Its Genyo e-learning system is the country’s first and only management system for basic education. This is in partnership with the Singapore-based Learning Edvantage or LEAD. Genyo makes it possible for schools to integrate ICT in classroom instruction. It also launched the 3rd Generation Textbooks and Scholastic Enhancement Materials Digital Edition during the event.
